Introduced by Sen. John J. Tassoni, Jr. (D) on February 4, 2009, to permit any city or town council to tax twenty percent of the assessed valuation of property owned by private colleges and universities.

Higher education comes right after healthcare in terms of runaway costs. Many schools are run like private enterprises but have all the advantages of non-profit exclusion from taxation as well as receiving gifts which result in exemptions from taxation for the donors. A very nice double-dip for them. Perhaps there should be a limit on the amount of property (or tax dollars) which any one institution (or its affiliates) can claim as exempt.
